Fat Loss Diaries - Week Two
Hello friends! We're back with another overview of the week just gone by and my oh my was it a busy one! If you're a mum of school aged children, this week and the week just gone could be your child's half term break. My daughter is lucky as she is off BOTH weeks which means lot's of planning meals and making sure everyone is fed, as we also had my step son at home this week, so even more mouths to feed! It can be challenging for parents to make sure everyone is catered for and I resent cooking multiple meals at a time to suit everyone's needs. Dinners need to work across the board and adaptable depending on who is eating them which can be really hard, sometimes it feels like just meal planning and cooking is a full time job during the half term breaks. But I digress, this is about my progress and how I felt the week has gone based on my goals.
When I weighed in this morning, the number on the scale was 70.4kg. That's 1.2kg up from last week. I'm not a perfect human being, when I saw the number I was a bit disappointed as I had made a conscious effort to try not to eat so many biscuity snacks and I certainly hit my goal of my 10k steps a day - my average over the week was 11,838 which was slightly more than last week! I got in the gym twice (it should have been three times but sometimes as parents we have to make these sacrifices and when you're setting up a business from home with children in tow, sometimes something's got to give!) and I generally feel pretty good about the week. So why did the scale weight increase? There are many, many reasons! I could just be carrying more water weight, I know I am due on my cycle any day now. It might have been because I hadn't gone to the big toilet! Or maybe I'm just doing some great work in the gym and building a bit of muscle. Or, a possibility for sure, is that because I didn't track my calories, over the week I ate in a surplus. 1.2kg is unlikely to be all fat gain, but I am not going to pretend that I definitely ate in a deficit over the week because without tracking, how can I know?
At this stage in my weight loss/fitness/postpartum journey, I know when to be kind to myself and I know when to just be realistic. I have worked so hard on my mindset that although the spike in weight is disappointing, it certainly isn't demotivating and it definitely won't do any of these things:
1. Cause me to skip a meal or two.
2. Go and do a silly amount of cardio to "burn" calories.
3. Change my current eating habits in any way, shape or form.
When the spike happens, which it will, we are women - we do sometimes carry more water than other times, the trick is to carry on exactly as you were. Your goals are the same and the habits you need to implement are still required. I am going to continue to hit my 10k steps a day, I will plan when I can get my three gym sessions done and I will continue to eat intuitively (breastfeeding mama over here) focussing on high protein and fibre sources and nutrient dense foods I can consume in high volume. As well as allowing myself foods that I love because I don't believe in over-restriction as a method for weight loss.
As I did last week, I am going to answer one of my own questions from the check in form I send to my own clients. The question is "what did you do this week that made you proud?"
There were two things fitness related that I did last week that made me proud. #1 was going out for a run on Wednesday night and fighting through the fear of going out in the dark. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be and it ended up being a great run which contributed towards my charity fundraiser for Tommy's. I definitely feel more confident about running in the evening again. Thing #2 was the group hike I completed today (Sunday) - it ended up being just over 8km and I walked the whole thing with Ralph in the carrier. The hills were hilling to say the least. It was a challenging walk and took over two hours to complete. But the reason I'm proud is not that I competed it but that I ENJOYED it. The location was stunning and I am super grateful to have been a part of it.
When I was on the hike, I couldn't help but think about my teenage years I spent in the Army Cadets, We did weekends away camping which included long walks carrying bergens and weapons, the works. I found it really hard and although I loved being a part of the cadets I always wished I was physically fitter for the longer excursions so I wasn't holding people behind. I feel like I did my teenage self proud today, not a single complaint. The walk gave me all the good hormones and I felt even more blessed to be doing it with my little boy tucked up close and my amazing partner at my side. Shout out to Ryan Le Breton from my local JD Gyms for arranging a great event!
So actually when I look at the week I just had, the beautiful walks I went on with my family, the activities we did, the food we ate, it was a fantastic week. The scale weight does not define my progress here. It's really good to spend some time on a Sunday night reflecting on the positives you've pulled from the week so you can apply them to the week ahead, from a workout you did that made you feel powerful to a meal that was delicious and fits in with your macros and calorie target that you can make again this week and put in the bank for future weeks. All of these little things add up to the bigger picture - being your improved health and a lifestyle that brings you closer and closer to the body you want! I also got a haircut this week, it was overdue about 6 months. That small thing made me feel awesome - prioritise self care ladies. The people around you will thank you for it.
